What is Miss Betty and where are you from?

Miss Betty is a pixy.  Now, pixies look a lot like humans and are sort-of like sprites without wings and can’t fly, who travel on wishes and wind.  (All Miss Betty’s wings are borrowed from butterflies, bees, dragonflies and fairies).  I am from a place in the sky called W’www’www’wwwwwww’w’w’wwwwwwwwww’w, which is unpronounceable unless you speak Wind, Bird, Butterfly, Dragonfly, Sprite, Pixy, Fairy or Bee.  My home is invisible to most earthbound people, but if you go outside, turn your face to the sky, squint, peek out of the right corners of your eyes then spin clockwise really, really fast, you may catch a glimpse of it.  My home is known for the gauzy fabrics which we spin from droplets of rainbows.  The fabrics are used to make butterfly, dragonfly, sprite, fairy and bee wings. 

How did you come to be amongst humans?

Miss Betty has a twin sister named Lila.  We loved to watch you earthbounders as you live your lives.  Well, one day, while we were peering from our land to yours below, Lila saw and fell in love with an earthbounder.  Now, he couldn’t move to our land because he wouldn’t be able to see anything or talk to anyone and would slide through the layers to the earth below, so Lila wished herself earthbound to be with her love. They got married and now Lila lives as an earthbounder and has a family of her own. This is very nice for Miss Betty since she now has a nephew and nieces to play with when she visits.

Does Miss Betty have Children?

No. In W’www’www’wwwwwww’w’w’wwwwwwwwww’w, we are a land of pixies, fairies and sprites. No one is old and no one is young.  Only earthbounders are so lucky.  When one of us falls in love and wants to have a family, we wish ourselves earthbound so we can be as happy as earth mommies and daddies.

What is your favorite thing to do?

Read. We don’t have any written language in W’www’www’wwwwwww’w’w’wwwwwwwwww’w. We communicate through speech and images.  When I visited my sister in Lincoln, I noticed all the shelves with all the pretty books that knew everything. The children would take one and read to me.  Well, I just had to try it myself. Lila taught me to read and I’ve loved it ever since.  I read every book I can get my hands on, then go home and share it with my friends. The fairies especially love it.  I realized that I could bring my love of books to every child I know. So that’s what I do.

Why is Miss Betty so bright and colorful?

The entire world is bright and colorful.  Just because animals and insects were made with all the cool colors like red, blue, purple, orange, yellow and green, doesn’t mean we can’t wear them, too.  I wish everyone was able to dress like a rainbow!

Do the fairies, pixies and sprites come with you to your readings?

No.  They like to go to gardens, streams, waterfalls, clouds and sunshowers on their own. They don’t like to be around a lot of people.  They’re so little, that earthbounders scare them a little.  They always ask Miss Betty to show them the bookstores and the libraries where I find all of my tales. They love books so much that they become brave. Next time you’re in a bookstore or library, take a deep breath and stand really, really still.  If you smell cookies and see a shimmer in the air, just know Miss Betty and her friends are close by. Don’t try to squint, peek out of the right corner of your eyes and spin clockwise really, really fast or you’ll scare the fairies.  We also leave faint trails of glitter on everything we’ve touched, so if you see that, you just missed us.
